Groß Berschkallen Church

Groß Berschkallen Church

The local Evangelical congregation received its own church in 1736 and its own pastor in 1756. After the Second World War Groß Berschkallen was renamed Gremyachye. Coordinates of the church: 54.702110, 21.672723.

The church was built of fieldstone and brick. The ceilings are flat. In 1878, in place of the small wooden roof turret, a massive tower with four gables was added to the church. The new roof was consecrated in 1892. A small altar annex.

A porch on the north side, possibly also on the south. Paired windows in round arches, in two rows: larger ones in the upper row, smaller ones in the lower.

After 1945 the church was intact. As it was not needed, it stood unused and was gradually wrecked by local youths. As a result the tower spire and the roof collapsed. Later it served as a warehouse for a long time. A room of white brick was added on the south side. A new, very low roof covered with asbestos-cement sheeting was built over the nave.
