Church of the Holy Family

Church of the Holy Family

A Catholic church in Oberhaberberg designed by the architect Friedrich Heitmann.

It was built and consecrated in 1907. The Neo-Gothic brick building has a tall, slender tower with a handsome pointed-arch entrance on the south. There is a small altar extension on the north.

Interior of the Church of the Holy Family

Inside, the high vaulted ceilings rest on two rows of slender columns. There was an organ.

The Church of the Holy Family was damaged during the storming of Königsberg. But the dense residential buildings around it saved it from heavy damage; it was mainly the tower that suffered. After the war the church was used as a warehouse.

In the early 1970s restoration of the church began, so that the concert hall of the Kaliningrad Philharmonic could open in it.

The first concerts were held there in 1980. On 20 October 1982 an organ was installed in the concert hall by the Czechoslovak firm Rieger-Kloss. Today the church is very popular with the city's residents. World-famous musicians come here, and in 1990 an international organ music festival was held.
