Eydtkuhnen Church

Eydtkuhnen Church

After the Second World War Eydtkuhnen came to be called Chernyshevskoye. Coordinates of the church: 54.639799, 22.733350.

At first, services were held in a hall of the old station of the Royal Prussian Eastern Railway. The hall was consecrated in 1863. A beautiful new brick church in the Romanesque style was built by Friedrich Adler in 1887–89. Its solemn consecration took place on 10 November 1889. The church had two towers with bells and tall spires.

The central portal was in the section between the towers. Inside were Gothic star vaults with columns partly built into the walls. The galleries were narrow. In plan the church was cruciform.

In the semicircular chancel with three pairs of tall windows stood the altar, with the pulpit to its right. Opposite the altar, above the entrance, was the organ.

During the fighting the church was badly damaged. Practically all the roofs of the towers and the nave were destroyed. After the war two thirds of the town, together with the church, were handed over to the military. They used the church as a storehouse. In 1994 the depot was moved out. As of 1996 it is not used in any way.
