Grünhayn Church

Grünhayn Church

After the Second World War Grünhayn was renamed Krasnaya Gorka, and in the 1960s, for unknown reasons, it was wiped off the face of the earth. Coordinates of the place where the church stood: 54.668589, 21.167136.

A former royal village, seven kilometres north-west of Wehlau (Znamensk). The parish church is first mentioned in a charter of 1361. In the 19th century its patron was the king. It was built of fieldstone. In 1841 it was plastered. A very imposing tower, evenly articulated by pointed and round blind windows, probably from the early 17th century.

The north side of the nave was articulated by narrow blind windows. To the east there was an elongated rectangular chancel. The church was last rebuilt in 1792.

The altar dates from 1696, the pulpit from the early 17th century, the confessional from around 1700. The bells were cast in 1773 and 1833.

The church's post-war history is unknown. The village was destroyed in the 1960s together with the church; today even its foundations can barely be made out.
