Hermsdorf Church

Hermsdorf Church

The church was built of fieldstone soon after the village was founded. Church lands are mentioned as early as 1337. In the mid-20th century Hermsdorf was renamed Pogranichny. Coordinates of the church: 54.431717, 20.179752.

The tower was demolished in 1801, and the nave collapsed along with it. Construction of the new church was completed in 1805. On the south wall the church had a finely carved crucifix together with St Mary and St John. A granite holy-water stoup stood in the porch. The bell bore Gothic inscriptions. A new tower was built later.

The church was damaged during the fighting in 1945. In this state it was used as a storehouse after the war.

It stood for decades without repairs and became unusable. In the 1970s it was demolished. Today the church is recalled by trees planted in a circle and the base of the tower.

In Pogranichny a memorial stone with a carved inscription, set up for the 600th anniversary of the village of Hermsdorf, has survived.
