Ischdaggen Church

Ischdaggen Church

The first parish church was built in 1633. Its pastor was Georg Bayer. In the mid-20th century Ischdaggen, having spent several years as Branden, became Lermontovo. Coordinates of the church: 54.600596, 22.047320.

The present church was built in 1737. The chancel is semicircular. The sacristy added on the north side was also semicircular, with the porch next to it. There is no tower. The foundation is of fieldstones. The windows are set in round arches. A flat wooden ceiling.

The pulpit and altar date from the early 18th century, with four figures of apostles. The confessional, with Corinthian columns, dates from the early 17th century. The organ of 1833 was built by Papendick of Tilsit. The bells dated from 1831 and 1840. In front of the altar lies the gravestone of Pastor Perkuhn (1709).

The church stands away from the road and somewhat apart from the village. After the war it was intact. Before a use was found for it, it suffered both from the local (newly arrived) population and from the weather.

Today the church is partly used as a warehouse, while part of it was possibly occupied by an asphalt plant (now idle), as suggested by a large sheet-metal extension on the south side.

The windows on the north and east have been bricked up completely, those on the south partly. The roof over the nave is covered with asbestos-cement sheets; over the chancel, on the south side, the tiles remain. The sacristy has been demolished and its entrance bricked up. The porch is intact, but its entrance has been made rectangular. The cemetery has partly survived. By 2000 only the shell of the walls remained.
