Kaliningrad

Modern Kaliningrad is a city of contrasts. The nondescript buildings of the centre may disappoint. However, our route is designed so that you are left with an exceptionally favourable impression — the elegant houses and villas of Maraunenhof and Amalienau, old monuments, the port. In addition, we will see several of the city gates and towers that were part of the fortress wall.

Duration: 2.5–5 hours.

Group size: up to 4 people.

Route map

Juditten Church

The tour begins by the walls of the oldest local church, the Juditten Church (1288).

Ratshof

Next on our way is the charming Ratshof district with the narrowest streets in present-day K-grad. The local church has been converted into a rock club.

The port

The heart of Kaliningrad is the port on the Pregel. Life here never stops, day or night. It is the most picturesque place in the city. We will see the grandiose Prussian granaries, the port cranes and the ships, including the famous sailing ships "Kruzenshtern" and "Sedov".

Kaliningrad portThe Kaliningrad Commercial Sea Port.

And of course we will have a coffee here at "Elevator", one of the trendiest cafés in the city.

AmalienauThe Amalienau district is made for leisurely walks.

The Amalienau villa district

The cosiest district of modern Kaliningrad, its face. Seeing the main sights of Amalienau is a must for everyone who comes to the Kaliningrad Region.

The Cathedral on Kant Island (Kneiphof)

The place where most tourists begin getting to know the city comes in the middle of our programme. Here are the main local shrines — Kant's grave and the monument to Duke Albrecht. It is highly advisable to find time to look into the cathedral museum, which displays a fine model of the centre of pre-war Königsberg.

The ruins of Königsberg Castle

Sadly, Königsberg Castle has not survived to the present day. It was badly damaged in the British bombing raids of 1944; then, in '45, came the storming of the city, when it suffered again. Its fate was sealed by Soviet party officials who, in the 1960s, against the opinion of Kaliningrad's cultural community, took the final decision to demolish it.

KneiphofAlas, the island town of Kneiphof and Königsberg Castle (in the background) survive only in photographs.

On the site where the ruins of Königsberg Castle towered half a century ago, the city plans to lay out a park, but for now part of the area is taken up by a car park. We will look at photographs of the castle and at what remains of it — a small fragment of the southern terrace.

King's GateSculptural portraits of Prussia's leading statesmen on the façade of the King's Gate.

The King's Gate and the fortress wall of Königsberg

The King's Gate currently houses a branch of the Museum of the World Ocean. So as not to lose time, we will view it only from the outside.

The Rossgarten Gate, the Dohna Tower, the Maraunenhof district

We will return to the centre through another beautiful surviving district, which begins beyond the Rossgarten Gate.
