The Löbenicht Hospital Church

The Löbenicht Hospital Church

The Löbenicht Hospital was founded as a convent by Grand Master Heinrich Dusemer von Arfberg in 1349. A church was consecrated within its grounds in 1350.

At first it was a Cistercian convent dedicated to the Three Saints and the Virgin Mary. Later it became a Benedictine convent, and St. Benedict became its patron. In 1531 Duke Albrecht turned it into a hospital. After a fire in 1764 the church was rebuilt in 1771, and in 1903 it was demolished.

Some of the altar furnishings were later displayed in the collection of Königsberg Castle, together with a 15th-century altar.

The handsome entrance gate, made in 1771, was set up at the New Löbenicht Hospital on Heidemannstraße (now Cherepichnaya Street).

On the grounds of the former New Löbenicht Hospital, the chapel building has survived, as has, by some miracle, the entrance gate, slightly damaged by time and human hands.
