Logvino (Medenau)

Logvino (Medenau)

Logvino (German: Medenau), a settlement in the Zelenogradsk Urban District (until 2015 in the Zelenogradsk District, Pereslavskoye Rural Settlement). Outlying farmsteads lie up to 3.2 km from the centre. Nearby are Mount Ozyornaya (See-Berg, 62.6) and Lake Bolshoye (Groß See). Founded in 1263. Population: 276 (2012).

It is known that a Prussian settlement existed on the site of Medenau as early as the 11th century BC. In 1255 the Bohemian king Ottokar II subjugated yet another tribe of the Sambians here. After that, a castle was built on the site of the Prussian earth-and-timber fortress. Medenau is first mentioned in documents in 1263, in connection with the transfer of half of the settlement, together with 20 Hufen of land and 20 peasant families, to a certain Heinrich Stoubek. On 10 January 1326 the foundation of Medenau was confirmed by charter, and town rights were granted at the same time. In 1327 Medenau Castle was strengthened by the addition of an outer bailey (Vorburg), after which for a long time it was a fortified manor of the bishop; later the administration of the Kammeramt was housed in it. In the 14th century a church was built.

As early as the Second Peace of Thorn (1466), Medenau Castle is no longer mentioned as a fortification. By the 17th century the buildings of the fortress had been dismantled for building materials.

A street in Medenau

In the 19th century Medenau consisted of the village of Medenau and the Adlig Medenau estate. Both localities belonged to the Landkreis Fischhausen (from 1939 the Landkreis Samland). Medenau church was the parish church for 30 surrounding villages and estates. In 1874 Amtsbezirk No. 15 Medenau was established in the Landkreis Fischhausen, comprising seven rural communities: Kosnehnen (54°47'19'' N 20°11'30'' E), Kragau (Prokhladnoye), Medenau (Logvino), Mossehnen (54°46'20'' N 20°10'00'' E), Ponacken (Voronezhskoye), Schuditten (Orekhovo) and Wischehnen (Podgornoye), as well as seven Gutsbezirke: Kathrimhöfen (54°45'15'' N 20°13'12'' E), Klein Medenau (54°46'30'' N 20°10'49'' E), the Vorwerk Kragau (Prokhladnoye), Adlig Medenau (Logvino), Ziegenberg (Podgornoye), Sickenhöfen (Murmanskoye) and Warengen (54°47'18'' N 20°13'07'' E). The first head of the Amtsbezirk, in 1874–85, was the landowner Hermenau from Medenau. After him, in 1885–1900, the post was held by the landowner Wittenburg, also from Medenau, and in 1900–21 by Lützow, first a landowner and later a leaseholder. In 1927–43 the Amtsbezirk was run by the electrician Erich Zilinski, and from 1943 by the burgomaster Benno Saßnick, both of them also from Medenau.

On 9 September 1879 Emperor Wilhelm I held military manoeuvres here. In memory of this, an obelisk was erected in Medenau in 1881, stating that from this spot the emperor had watched the manoeuvres of the 1st Army Corps.
