Mehlkehmen Church

Mehlkehmen Church

After the Second World War Mehlkehmen was renamed Kalinino. Coordinates of the church: 54.447083, 22.575433.

The village lies on the river Pissa. The parish was founded in 1692 by Elector Friedrich III. Services were held in a small wooden building until 1699.

Owing to a lack of funds, the new Protestant church took seven years to build (1699–1706). It was built of fieldstones and bricks, with rounded-off corners. It measured 30 x 13.8 m. The tower was 30 m high, with stepped round-arched window openings. The weathervane on the tower bore the date 1705. The building had rectangular windows, only slightly rounded at the top. Inside there were flat painted wooden ceilings.

The altar and pulpit were combined and framed by two fine Corinthian columns.

The sacristy held a crucifix. Two pewter altar candlesticks on feet of three balls, a brass font. An organ of 1846. Bells of 1766 and 1827. Repairs were carried out in 1929.

After the Second World War the church was intact. But it was not used in any way, and so it fell into a dangerous state of disrepair. The tower roof was broken. After the decision was taken to use it as a storehouse, the windows were bricked up and the roof covered with asbestos-cement sheets. Only the shell of the tower remained. It housed a water-pumping installation.

Not far from the church stands a large school building.
