Neunischken Church

Neunischken Church

After the Second World War Neunischken was renamed Privolnoye. Coordinates of the church: 54.725580, 21.911574.

The Reformed community was formed in 1748 from colonists from Germany (Nassau), France and Switzerland. Services were held first in the school, then in a chapel, and from 1809 in a small wooden church. On 16 May 1872 the foundation stone of a new church was laid; it was consecrated on 31 October 1873.

A Gothic-style building with a small bell turret. Among the oldest items were a chalice and a jug, both of 1708, from Königsberg.

When the fighting ended, the church was intact. Lack of proper care led to the decay of the roofing and rafters. Later the turret was dismantled and the roof re-covered with asbestos-cement sheets. The windows were bricked up to the size of standard frames.

As of 1990 the outer walls were in satisfactory condition. The small buttresses were crumbling because their facing had been damaged. Several additional windows had been cut. Inside, the space had been divided into two floors and converted into a village house of culture.
