Obelischken Church

Obelischken Church

In 1846 the parish of Obelischken separated from those of Norkitten (Mezhdurechye, Chernyakhovsk District) and Didlacken (Telmanovo, Chernyakhovsk District). In 1938 Obelischken was renamed Schulzendorf, and after the Second World War it became Zelentsovo. Coordinates of the church: 54.583692, 21.603011.

On the First Sunday of Advent (5 December) 1855, after almost ten years of construction, a temporary church, the "Interimskirche", was consecrated in Obelischken. It was a half-timbered building that formed an extension of the school building.

On 25 May 1888 the foundation stone of a new church was laid, and on 11 December 1889 it was consecrated. It was a brick building with a tower containing a large round-arched entrance.

In its upper part the tower had four gables. The body of the church had small buttresses separating two-tier round-arched windows. Inside, galleries (balconies) ran along the walls between the lower and upper tiers of windows. A small vaulted altar niche with three windows set high up. The organ was built in 1904.

Ruins of Obelischken Church

The church survived the Second World War. It was used as a warehouse and then abandoned.

The roof tiles fell off, the rafters rotted, and in the 1980s the roof collapsed. Since 1990 the church has been an empty brick shell. The altar niche and its vaults have survived. The tower spire has been destroyed, as have all the annexes. The interior is overgrown with trees and bushes.
