Rossitten Church

Rossitten Church

The present church is the successor of an earlier one, buried by the sands of the Spit in 1812, in the village of Kunzen, which lay a little south of Rossitten, renamed Rybachy in the 20th century. Coordinates of the church: 55.152865, 20.855253.

The church in Rossitten was built in 1873 under the clear influence of the work of the architect Schlüter: of unrendered brick, with a semicircular apse and a bell-cote on the gable.

The interior was very simple. The altar stood in the apse, with the pulpit to its right.

The Second World War did not touch this area. The outside of the church has survived almost entirely; even the bell is intact.

The windows in the apse have been bricked up. The nave windows have been bricked up at the top and are now rectangular.

Until 1989 the church was used as a net-making workshop; then it was handed over to the Orthodox Church. The first church service was held in May 1990. Today the building houses the Orthodox church of St Sergius of Radonezh.
