Schönwalde Church

Schönwalde Church

A noble estate, a farmstead and a village nine kilometres (as the crow flies) south-east of Friedland (Pravdinsk). In the mid-20th century they were all renamed Snegirevo, which was struck off the register as early as the mid-1970s. Coordinates of the church: 54.418839, 21.149703.

A 14th-century church from the time of the Teutonic Order. It belonged to the archpresbyterate (Erzpriesteramt) of Friedland. In 1790 it was built anew. A wooden tower with a belfry on the south-west side of the church. A single-nave church building without a chancel, with a small wooden turret on the ridge of the roof. A granite holy-water basin.

A superb 17th-century pulpit. The lower part of the bell bore the date 1490.

Until 1974 it was an inhabited settlement, but then, deemed to have no future, it was struck off the register. The peasants were resettled to the central farmstead, and the buildings were dismantled. Nothing remains of the church. Of the noble estate only the foundations and fragments of walls have survived.
