Schönwalde Church

Schönwalde Church

After the Second World War the village of Schönwalde became the settlement of Yaroslavskoye. The local church was founded in the 14th century. It was last restored in 1864. Its coordinates: 54.777248, 20.706695.

The building is rectangular in plan, 25.5 x 12.5 metres. The walls are of fieldstone with brick corners. The window openings are rectangular. The tower dates from pre-Reformation times (the two lower storeys). The nave originally had star vaults, later a plank ceiling in the form of a shallow arch. The sacristy adjoined the nave on the east, the porch on the north. The pulpit was decorated with fine wood carving of 1631. The organ was installed in 1826. The church had three bells.

By May 1988 only the tower was left of the church, and remains of walls, in places no more than one and a half metres high, could be made out around the perimeter.

Interior of Schönwalde Church

It has not been possible to establish what state the church was in immediately after the war. But judging by the fact that the tower survived those hard times, that even the roof was intact and the plaster had fallen off in only a few places, one can conclude that the church came through the Second World War relatively well and was destroyed only afterwards.
