WINTER
December in Kaliningrad is traditionally a pre-New Year frenzy – life revolves around the main shopping centres, where, incidentally, you can find plenty of interesting things. The Evropa shopping centre, for example, hosts a Christmas market where you can buy handmade holiday sweets, original Christmas-tree ornaments, candles and all the other festive paraphernalia.
Kaliningrad winters are getting warmer year by year, so spending the New Year holidays by the sea is not such a bad idea – just don't count on snow.
01 Winter Drinks Festival in Svetlogorsk
Late December + the Christmas holidays
What to do? Stroll around wintry Svetlogorsk, warm up in cafés, spend time with friends.
The Winter Drinks Festival in Svetlogorsk has been held since 2012 and has already become popular with locals and visitors to the Kaliningrad Region – so much so that the regional Ministry of Tourism included it among the ten main events in the region in 2016. January mulled wine works wonders!
02 Long Sausage Festival (Lange Wurst)
Early February, Kaliningrad, Friedrichsburg Gate
What to do? Stroll, chat, eat.
This folk festival dates back to the winter of 1520, when the butchers of Königsberg made a sausage some twenty metres long and carried it through the town. The comical procession caused quite a stir, and so an intriguing Prussian tradition was born – the Long Sausage Festival, with a sausage that grew longer and longer from year to year until it peaked in 1601 at over four hundred metres. Today the festival offers its guests contests, dancing, songs and, of course, tastings of sausage made to old Prussian recipes.

Spring opens the outdoor events season: from food festivals and all sorts of fairs to football matches and bike rides.
In May you can start sunbathing in the "frying pans" of Zelenogradsk, and thrill-seekers can try a dip in the cold Baltic (water temperature 11-12 °C). The city is lovely too: forsythia and lilac are in bloom, the chestnut trees put up their "candles", and in the Botanical Garden you can admire the delicate pink blossom of the sakura.
03 Herring Day
April, Kaliningrad, the embankment by the Museum of the World Ocean
What to do? Eat fish, swap fishermen's tales.
The region's fishiest folk festival has been held since 2005 on the embankment by the Museum of the World Ocean. There is always a mouth-watering smell of smoked fish, and you can sample exotic variations on fish soup and "herring under a fur coat", dance your heart out and listen to fishermen's yarns.
04 Museum Night
The night of 15 to 16 May, in museums across the city and the region
What to do? See exhibitions, take part in educational quests.
This is probably the only time of year when there is a huge queue at the entrance to the Amber Museum, jazz plays in the Kaliningrad Art Gallery and a Moscow DJ fires up an improvised dance floor in the Friedrichsburg Gate. Engaging quests, the best exhibition projects and, of course, the company make Museum Night the main event of the spring.
05 Wheel Day
17 May, Kaliningrad, Baltika Stadium
What to do? Ride a bike, socialise.
Every year hundreds of fans of two-wheeled transport – from kick scooters to vintage bicycles and even dog sleds – gather in one of the city's beautiful historic districts. Costume bike rides, fun relays and circuit races through the city create the warm European atmosphere for which the townspeople love this festival so much. For cyclists it is one of the rare days when you can safely ride right on the roadway: car traffic is closed off wherever the festival takes place.

In summer the sheer number of events in the city and the region is enough to drive you mad – something interesting happens every weekend: open-air concerts, beach parties, film festivals and street fêtes. And of course it is the time for active holidays: beach volleyball tournaments, kitesurfing, rowing, sailing regattas and equestrian competitions give the lazy beach routine some serious competition.
There are wonderful spots with wild beaches on the Vistula and Curonian Spits. Good weather is a fine companion for travelling around the region.
In summer it is worth taking an overnight trip to Lake Vištytis and walking in the Rominta Forest, visiting the castles of East Prussia and discovering the charm of the small towns: Chernyakhovsk, Ozyorsk, Polessk, Pravdinsk, Gusev, Zheleznodorozhny...
06 Opening of the resort season in Zelenogradsk, the Rainbow Summer festival
12 June, Zelenogradsk, Wind Rose Square
What to do? Sunbathe, swim, buy souvenirs at the fair, watch open-air concerts.
In recent years Zelenogradsk has turned from a backwater seaside town into the region's main beach resort. A broad strip of sand along the shore, the legendary "frying pans" in the dunes that shelter you from the wind, and a wide, long promenade make Zelenogradsk the region's summer capital. So this is the place to see in the opening of the resort season.
07 Two Rectors' Cup sailing regatta
Mid-July, Baltiysk, Gdynia
What to do? Watch the sailing yachts, cheer for the Russian teams.
This big international sailing regatta in the waters of the Gulf of Gdańsk is a serious test for yachting enthusiasts and a thrilling spectacle for lovers of maritime romance. Yachtsmen from Russia and Poland compete for the amber cups of two sailing ships, the Russian barque Kruzenshtern and the Polish Dar Młodzieży.
08 Kaliningrad City Day
Second weekend of July, Kaliningrad
What to do? Stroll, eat street food, buy interesting things at the fair and the flea market, watch concerts.
The best of Kaliningrad in a single day: a big pedestrian zone on Prospekt Mira, concert programmes for every taste, flea markets, workshops, sports competitions, a parade of brass bands and vintage cars, street food.
This is the festival of the year, so you can literally meet the whole city out on the streets.
09 Baltic Debuts International Film Festival
Late July, Svetlogorsk, Yantar Hall variety theatre, the Military Sanatorium club
What to do? Watch films, greet the stars on the red carpet.
The main event at the region's most fashionable and refined resort, Svetlogorsk. This showcase of films by young directors from Russia and Europe traditionally plays to full houses. It is a great chance to bump into your favourite actors and directors on the promenade or in a café – and if you don't, you can always take up a spot by the red carpet before the opening ceremony.
10 Voting KiViN International Music Festival of KVN Teams
Mid-July, Svetlogorsk, Yantar Hall variety theatre
What to do? Laugh at jokes about Putin and Obama, get yourself into the footage for Channel One.
This festival of sparkling humour moved to the Kaliningrad Region in 2015, a textbook case of import substitution in the leisure sector. Voting KiViN fills Svetlogorsk's Yantar Hall variety theatre to capacity; one can only hope the festival keeps its local residence for a long time to come.
11 Navy Day (parade in Baltiysk)
26 July, Baltiysk
What to do? Stroll, watch the parade of warships, eat pearl barley and buckwheat with tinned stewed meat from the field kitchen, be a patriot.
Baltiysk celebrates City Day and Navy Day on the same day, which is hardly surprising, since it is the main base of the Baltic Fleet in the Kaliningrad Region. The programme is patriotic entertainment only: a parade of warships, military re-enactments and theatrical shows, plus a field kitchen and festivities on the pier.
12 Kaliningrad City Jazz Festival
First weekend of August, Kaliningrad, Central Park
What to do? Listen to jazz, sit on the lawn, dance, socialise.
For atmosphere and the number of renowned Western musicians, Kaliningrad City Jazz is the main event of the summer. The region's first jazz fest marked its tenth anniversary with a concert by ZAZ. Over the years the festival has raised its own audience: the city's residents now know their way around jazz and everything that goes with it. This is where you will see stylish dresses, extravagant hats and bright bow ties. Kaliningrad City Jazz has room both for a glittering society crowd and for easy-going get-togethers on the lawn, and for wild dancing to exhaustion right by the stage.
13 Neighbours Festival
Early August, the village of Krasnolesye, Vištytis Ecological and Historical Museum
What to do? Try home cooking, watch a concert, dance in a ring, walk in the forest.
The Neighbours Festival takes the form of a village fête deep in the relict forests of the Rominta Forest, in the magical village of Krasnolesye, 150 kilometres from Kaliningrad. Neighbours gather here: residents of the surrounding villages and guests from Lithuania and Poland.
Everything at Neighbours is homely: the people of Krasnolesye treat guests to home-made pies and offer vegetables from their own plots and handicrafts. In the evening there are ring dances and dancing round the bonfire.
14 Territory of Peace festival of world cultures (to be reformatted)
14-16 August, Kaliningrad, Kant Island
What to do? Browse the fair, watch open-air concerts, try national dishes.
The festival of cultures on Kant Island is a big fair where you can always find something interesting – pictures painted in wine, say, or felted-wool paintings; the exotic national cuisines are always delicious, and in the evenings there are superb shows on the main stage. Where else in Kaliningrad will you see Cypriot shepherds' dances and real flamenco?
15 F. Kafka and G. Orwell Post-Intellectual Forum
Mid-August, Vistula Spit
What to do? Attend lectures, join discussions, relax post-intellectually in the evenings.
The Vistula Spit is Russia's westernmost point; the border between the Kaliningrad Region and Poland runs here, and picturesque nature meets the apocalyptic landscapes of half-ruined German military structures. Over the years Oleg Kashin, Yury Saprykin, Dmitry Bykov, Leonid Parfyonov and many other well-known post- and plain intellectuals have taken part in the discussions of the socio-economic and political agenda in Russia and the world.
16 Korotche Short Film Festival

The main and largest festival in the popular genre of military history re-enactment takes place not far from the town of Gusev. The programme: re-enactments of combat, a field kitchen and even vintage fashion shows.
Autumn is a particularly cosy time in Kaliningrad: it is still warm, you can sunbathe and swim until mid-September, and then comes the chestnut-gathering season and the time for autumn picnics with blankets and tea in a thermos. Autumn brings the new theatre season and new museum exhibitions, and townspeople gather in snug coffee shops. Especially popular are the art spaces Kvartira, Katarsis and Vorota (in the Sackheim Gate).
The last warm days are best spent walking around the city: the historic district of Amalienau is especially beautiful at this time. Here, on Pugachyova Street, is an unusual museum of Königsberg domestic life, Altes Haus.
18 Baltic Seasons arts festival
September-October, Kaliningrad, Kaliningrad Regional Drama Theatre
What to do? Enjoy theatre, opera and ballet.
The festival traditionally opens the new theatre season in Kaliningrad. The programme features only the best productions of leading Moscow and St Petersburg theatres, as well as renowned foreign companies. Thanks to the Seasons, Kaliningraders have seen The Barber of Seville performed by the La Scala youth academy and The Marriage of Figaro by the Comédie-Française.
19 Street Food Weekend city picnic
Mid-September, Kaliningrad, Kant Island
What to do? Eat, socialise.
A city picnic and a place for the most unexpected encounters: the street food festival proves that food is not just about taking in calories but also a means of communication. In just a few years the organisers have managed to create a full-fledged street food culture in Kaliningrad: townspeople have learnt to tell falafel from meatballs and ordinary rolls from spring rolls. Food trucks with unusual recipes have appeared in the parks. All this has been made possible by the extraordinary popularity of the Street Food Weekend festival.
