Baltiysk and the Vistula Spit

Baltiysk and the Vistula Spit

The Vistula Spit is separated from the mainland part of the region by a strait, on whose shore stands the westernmost point of the Russian Federation, the town of Baltiysk. After crossing to the Spit by ferry, we will see all its sights: the "Old Lunette" museum, the ruins of the Western Fort, the beach and the Neutief seaplane harbour. On the way back we will have lunch with a sea view at the "Vitland" art village, where we will honour the memory of the Bishop of Prague, Saint Adalbert, the first Christian missionary in Prussia.

Duration: 8 hours.

Group size: up to 4 people.

Good to know: in summer you need to bring personal protection against too much sun, starting with basic headwear.

Guide: Mikhail.

Car: Škoda Roomster.

Route map

Baltiysk

A short walk along the shore of the strait to the monument to Elizabeth Petrovna, which marks the westernmost point of the Russian Federation, a beautiful lighthouse, the monument to Peter the Great, and a multitude of vessels moored at the quay.

The ferry to the Vistula Spit

We sail to the Spit at 12.00 and return on the ferry that leaves the Spit at 16.00. The ferry offers superb views — do not miss the moment, take photos: these will be the best shots you bring home!

BaltiyskThe monument to Peter the Great in Baltiysk.

On the Spit we will visit five key sites: the "Old Lunette" museum, the Western Fort, the mole, the beach and the "Neutief" seaplane harbour. But first things first.

Dry docks of BaltiyskWork is always in full swing in the local dry docks.

The "Old Lunette" museum

At the café of the "Old Lunette" museum, devoted to the history of the Vistula Spit, you can have a bite to eat, and on the way out you can linger and listen to a local expert's account of the history of the Spit. The tours here are tied to the ferry timetable.

The mole

Weather permitting, we will walk about a kilometre out to sea along the mole.

The Western Fort

Picturesque ruins on the seashore, perhaps the best thing on the Vistula Spit.

The beach

The Spit has one of the best beaches in the region — those who wish can go for a swim.

Beach on the Vistula SpitThe beach on the Vistula Spit in early spring.

Moving from the beach on the seashore towards the lagoon, where the next site awaits us, we will pass through the village (formally a district of Baltiysk), so that travellers get a complete picture of the Vistula Spit.

VitlandThe café of the "Vitland" art village on the shore of the Baltic Sea.

The "Neutief" seaplane harbour

The huge, decaying hangars for seaplanes, which have not been seen here for half a century, are covered with numerous graffiti — today they are an integral part of the Spit's character.

The "Vitland" art village

Lunch at a cosy café with a sea view, an after-lunch stroll along the beach and to the memorial to Saint Adalbert, the first Christian missionary in Prussia.
