Lutheran Church in the Pillau Citadel

Lutheran Church in the Pillau Citadel

On the site of an old wooden Swedish church erected in 1635, the Great Elector built a new one in 1658–1660. After the Second World War Pillau was renamed Baltiysk. Coordinates of the church: 54.642376, 19.887506.

In its place a garrison church was built in 1717. It burned down in 1761. It was then rebuilt and became known as the Kreuzkirche (Church of the Cross). It stood next to the inner fortress gate. Cruciform in plan. No tower. Wooden groin vaults on slender Corinthian columns of wood.

During the fighting the garrison church within the fortress was damaged. In the first half of the 1960s the ground floor was still standing.

Later, once the remains of the church had fallen into serious disrepair, they were demolished. An inspection in 1997 found nothing left on the site of the church.
