The church was built in 1756. A plastered boulder building with rectangular windows and a tower whose upper part is of wood, with a gallery at the top. The tower was built in 1820 with a spire in the form of a stepped pyramid. The hall has an ordinary shape. In the central nave, a barrel vault on simple columns. The side aisles have flat ceilings. The altar and pulpit are combined. Organ of 1760, renewed in 1898. The church had two bells.

After the Second World War the church building was intact, but for lack of care and supervision it quickly fell into ruin.

By 1964 only walls no more than 3 metres high remained. In 1964 the 250th anniversary of the birth of the founder of Lithuanian literature, Kristijonas Donelaitis, who was pastor in Tollmingkehmen from 1743 to 1780, was celebrated. The Ministry of Culture of the Lithuanian SSR and the Kaliningrad Regional Executive Committee decided to restore the church building.
In 1979 the restoration was completed, and the exhibition of the memorial museum was installed in the church. Part of the cemetery around the church was preserved.
