Chernyakhovsk

Chernyakhovsk

A town that usually stays on the periphery of the attention of those travelling around Prussia will, on closer inspection, pleasantly surprise you. You just have to step off the usual transit routes and get a little lost in it. Here there are two castles, parks that any town in the region would envy, churches, lively pre-war urban architecture, and bridges the like of which are hard to find! On top of that, a Bismarck Tower looms here and the Pregel begins its course.

Route map

For a sightseeing visit, you can enter Chernyakhovsk along either the left or the right bank of the Pregel. On both sides there is something to begin your acquaintance with the town. If you come along the A-229 federal highway, it is a mineral water pump room. On the opposite bank, exactly facing the spot where the Inster and the Angrapa merge to give rise to the Pregel, a Bismarck Tower stands on a high hill. Alas, it is still falling into ruin, which makes it all the more important to see it while there is time.

Next on the compulsory programme are Georgenburg and Insterburg castles.

The former was an episcopal castle, the latter a classic castle of the Teutonic Order, from which its komtur controlled the surrounding territories. By local standards both are in satisfactory condition. Each has an action group that, as best it can, keeps the castle from deteriorating and runs various projects there.

Although Chernyakhovsk's urban fabric suffered losses in the 20th century, it is nevertheless full of sights worth seeing.

To begin with, the town has the two most striking surviving East Prussian villas — Brandes and Chibulinski. The first now houses a kindergarten, the second a children's music school. Chernyakhovsk's parks deserve attention too. There are also two of them. One is laid out around the Upper Lake, the other on the bank of the Angrapa. The latter has two footbridges, each more interesting than the other — the Humpback Bridge and the suspension bridge.

Two churches have survived in the town — a Reformed one and a Catholic one.

Only the water tower is a single one — but what a tower! Among the monuments, worth noting are the equestrian statue of Barclay de Tolly, the memorial to the uhlans of the 12th Insterburg Regiment and, once again, two steam locomotives on pedestals. The biblical maxim comes to mind: two of every kind.

Chernyakhovsk has not yet acquired any Michelin-starred restaurants, but eating well here is no problem. At the café "U Solokhi", for example, the chicken Kiev is good.

On the way back to Kaliningrad you can stop at the battlefield of Gross-Jägersdorf, where in 1757 the Russian army inflicted one of its few defeats on the Prussian army. But that is a long story of its own, about which you can read an informative article if you follow this link.
